Why Does Earth have a magnetic field?

Earths magnetic field is generated by the rotation of the earths inner and outer cores. The solid inner core rotates faster than the liquid outer core.
This movement creates a charge and due to the largely iron and nickel composition the core becomes a giant electromagnet.
The magnetism creates a large magnetic shroud around our precious home. The field emanates from two poles of our planet and provides protection from the sun's dangerous rays, comets and many other things that fall down to earth.

This field works much like a strong normal magnet but on a much larger scale.

Since magnets poles attract each other the field curves around, like the magnet on the left. This same effect occurs on the earth and creates the field to protect us from cosmic rays.
